Capitola: Legal ling off Soquel point

James and Ling
James landed this legal ling off Soquel point in 40 feet of water using swim bait.

Conditions today are a bit drizzly and slightly bumpy. The bait is a bit more sparse - it seems to have moved to New Brighton.

Bob was fly fishing the New Brighton area and hooked up a 5 pound striper using a squid pattern fly. After he landed the striper, he had a white sea bass follow his squid up to the boat (no bite).

Capitola: Wharf update

Fishing on the wharf has been productive….. if you like small fish. Today has seen plenty of anchovies, shiners, king fish, and perch. Nothing big, but fun for the kids.

There is still quite a lot of bait in the water, but it remains spread out, so jigging is still your best bet. If Ed manages to get some into the bait tank tonight we’ll let you know.

Capitola: Umm…YEAH Baby!

Ken M and BIG flatties
Ken M scored these two flatties off O’Neil’s today from his kayak using live anchovies and a 1/2 oz weight. The small one is 15 pounds. The big one is 34.6 pounds!!!!

He caught the 15 pounder first, and had it flapping around on the back of the kayak when he hooked up the monster. When he got it to the surface, he got a boga grip onto it and basically rode it like a horse. He doesn’t recall how long of a ride it was, though - you know - who would?

Congratulations Ken!!

Needless to say - sounds like halibut in the O’Neil’s area looks pretty good at the moment.

Just a reminder: The clock is ticking to sign up for Bayside Marine’s 4th of July weekend tournament.

Santa Cruz: Good fishing at south rock

Over the radio just now, a number of boats reporting good fishing at south rock. All kinds of rock cod, and at least one big ’something’ - missed the details - it was either a ling or a halibut.

Santa Cruz: Halibut picking up

Looks like Josh’s horse’s mouth spoke the truth. Steve M caught a 25 pound halibut off one of our rentals right between the wharf and the mile buoy using squid in Santa Cruz today.

Capitola: Still good fishing on the reef

Happy rockfish anglers
Our intrepid visiting teachers returned and bagged some rock fish today. There’s still some quality rock fish catching going on on the Capitola reef.

Also, another boat fishing the reef area caught a 7 pound lingcod and a 15 pound thresher shark using live smelt.

Capitola: Sea bass down, halibut up

Art and big flattie
The seabass bite seems to have gone away today. For a while people were catching and releasing lots of shorties, but that petered out later in the day. Meanwhile, halibut fishing seems to have taken a turn for the better. Art landed this beautiful 27 pounder using live anchovies in 40 feet of water off O’Neil’s.

There’s still plenty of bait to be jigged up - same story - too thin for a throw net, so jigging is the way to go.

Capitola: Cloudy, drizzly, cool, and some bait

There’s a lot of bait in the shallows, but it’s not balled up - just thin on the surface. So a throw net isn’t going to be useful right now. Sabiki bait jigs are working well though. Look for jumping bait, dark spots, and bird action. We’ve seen some good pelican diving action near the beach today.

There are about 10 boats working the same area of kelp as yesterday. No word yet.

Capitola: Late seabass bite

White sea bass in cooler
Mike and Pete got into some more white sea bass just now. They’ve been flylining live anchovies from a canoe at the edge of the kelp that everyone’s been on today and got these two - one’s 28 inches, the other is 30. They’ve gone back out to see if they can find some more. Seems the way to go today has been to make sure you do *not* have motorized propulsion on whatever you’re fishing from.

Santa Cruz: Nice ling from a rental

Word from Santa Cruz has been slow in coming lately, but today we heard that David H brought in a 7 pound ling from around the whistle buoy from one of our Santa Cruz rentals.

Josh has heard it from the horse’s mouth however that halibut fishing has been picking up very nicely just off the light house in Santa Cruz, so there’s definitely some opportunity there.

Capitola: Photo finish

Cris and Ling and Mike and Halibut
This is just a photo update for the lingcod and halibut from the earlier report - Cris got the ling, Mike got the halibut. Nice catch!

Also a kayaker today - we didn’t get a name - got a 28.5 inch (legal) white sea bass fishing the edge of the eastern kelp beds today. Many of the private power boats around him were getting shorts. He said he’d be back tomorrow - hopefully we’ll get a name.

Improved feed performance (probably)

I’ve enabled something that I believe will cause feed aggregators (like google reader, etc) to immediately pick up posts when added.  So - if you subscribe to the feeds from within an feed aggregator and found it was lagging, it should be working better now.  I’ve also increased the feed entries-at-a-time from 10 to 20 articles.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about - it’s those various buttons on the bottom right side of the page that go to google, yahoo, etc.

Time stamp issues resolved

There were a couple of things throwing post time stamps off by about an hour. They’ve been resolved. Blog entries posted prior to this post will continue to have incorrect time stamps ( you need to subtract about an hour from the reported time to get the actual time of the post). From this point forward however all posts will have a correct time stamp.

Sorry for the confusion.

Capitola: Nice fishing around the kelp beds

Chris just came in to get some more bait, and tells us that he’s been doing ok fishing the edge of the kelp bed to the west of the wharf. So far he’s gotten 5 rock cod, 1 legal ling, and 1 legal halibut, all caught using live anchovies.

A number of other boats are fishing that area now and are doing similarly well. We have rental boats available still in Capitola if you want to get in on the action.

Capitola: Fashionably late

Rich just informed me that he saw someone hook up with a 25 inch white sea bass off the end of the wharf at about 7:30pm - no additional details (and that, also, is fishing).

Also for those of you who might be interested, Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz has organized a fishing tournament for the weekend of July 4th.
