It was fantastic weather here today all day long. There was the usual morning fog, but once that burned off it was just phenomenal.
Still a bit slow fishing - we had all our boats out, but only saw a few rock cod here and there. Looks like we’re still recovering from that overabundance of bait and the effects of the swell that’s been around for a few days.
The highliner here today was Jake - he landed this 23 inch flattie using a green and orange fish trap just outside the eastern kelp bed. Congratulations Jake!
Despite the lack of fish, most people had a really great time on the water today because the weather was so nice. Looks like tomorrow is going to be similar weather wise and the southern swell appears to be settling down a lot - just an occasional 2 footer now and then. Here’s hoping the fishing picks up a bit. |

But apparently Sean and Josh fishing south rock picked up a nice pair of vermillion and some blacks and blues. They just kept the vermillion.
Word from Santa Cruz is that some small halibut have been gotten in all the usual spots - lighthouse was best. Lots of shorts, but a reasonable amount of catching anyway. |

Bayside Marine is having a fishing tournament during the July 4th weekend for halibut, lingcod, sea bass, tuna, striped bass, and rock fish. The entry fee is $30 per person for the entire weekend - July 4-6, or $15/day.
If you want to participate in the tournament but don’t have a boat, we can set you up! Make your boat reservations at our Santa Cruz and Capitola locations, and call Bayside at 831-475-2173 to sign up for the tournament.
If you’ve never been in a tournament before, give it a try! For the price of entry and a boat rental, you’ll have a blast and there are some great prizes for the winners. Some of the prizes are worth more than $400!
