Results were a little slower today. One little halibut came in, some nice browns, some blacks, some blacks and yellows, one legal ling, one teeny weenie little thresher. But there were a lot of smiling faces - weather wise nice and a few boats got to see a humpback blowing its nose about two miles straight off the wharf. Guess where I’m going tomorrow :)Still little splotches of red tide close to the wharf, and not a lot of wharf action except: there was a report of a striper chasing a krocodile down close to the beach. There’s a thing that’s more of a surge than a swell going on, and that’s probably the culprit.
New and improved Boat Bucks are available here.
P.S. Our apologies to Aaron - we had a camera problem and lost the photo of you with your rock cod, else we would have posted it. |

Here’s Kristina with a black rock cod. She got this out at the mile reef using the always reliable shrimp fly jig. The fog has retreated but it looks like it’s going to come back in real quick. The swell is down more, and there are only small remants of the red tide - a few red streaks here and there. We’ll see what happens when the fleet comes in. |

We had the whole 20 boat fleet out today, and every boat that went fishing came back with at least one fish. These were mostly rock cod - we saw one small halibut come in. We were hoping that one of the rentals was going to come in with a big flattie, but it turned out to be a rumor based on the fact that one customer was banging on his boat with his hand to make it *sound* like he had a halibut. Ha ha.
On the wharf we saw a couple dozen perch come in - not bad for a red tide. The red tide is making great strides toward being gone - it kind of started dissipating like ‘the blob’ this afternoon, and at the moment it appears to be nearly gone.
There was a lot more bait in the water away from the wharf today in anywhere from 30 to 50 feet of water in scattered balls. Sardines mostly - some anchovies and mackerel as well. We still had a bit of swell today, but it appears to be dropping (and is forecast to do so through tomorrow). Hopefully the halibut bite will pick up between that and the disappearance of the red tide.
We just got the word that we’re going to do Boat Bucks for the rest of the season, so stay tuned - we’ll put a new version up tonight or tomorrow.

Aaron just brought in this thresher shark. He caught it at the mile reef using a jigged live anchovy on a 10 pound line! That’s awesome. We’ve had two other rentals come in so far reporting threshers hooked up but lost at the boat. |

Kenny and Dewey and friends struck gold today off Soquel point - four lings, four limits of rock cod, and 150 pounds (!) of jack smelt. They got the lings on jack smelt, the rock cod and jack smelt on bait jigs with frozen squid. Rock on.The red tide around the wharf looks like it might be dissipating - hard to tell for sure but there are definitely lots of non-red areas developing. |

Glen just came in with his usual awesome catch. He was fishing in 38 feet of water off O’Neil’s with megabaits and fish traps, and he brough in limits of black and shag cod to 2.5 pounds, and one ling about 8 pounds.

Marilou caught this legal halibut fishing live bait off Soquel point today - it was her first! Congratulations Marilou.
While halibut are biting (sheriff Larry’s brother Jim got one this morning off the mile reef), bite has slowed down a bit due to a small swell that’s moved in. They’re still being caught, but not as frequently or as big. We got word from someone who was over on the Santa Cruz wharf that there’s a pretty decent halibut bite going on on the east side of the wharf - nothing big, but a consistent bite. We also saw a decent number of rock cod come in today off the rentals.
We still have a small area of red tide around the wharf here, but it remains very confined - once you leave the immediate area you’ll find good water quickly. Otherwise, weather for the weekend looks pretty good - some fog in the morning followed by a sunny afternoon. Probably great for kayak fishing! |

Josh was the highliner today with two good sized halibut. Four of the rental boats and a private boat had legal halibut today - not much more than legal, but legal. Several had a few rock cod - browns, gophers, black-and-yellows. A few boats got into some jacksmelt and sardines and mackerel. A couple of rentals saw some threshers as well off Soquel point - interesting.
The bait has moved out - out of the harbor, away from the ship. There are some small patchy spots - you can still jig some up. There’s lots of good bait, but you have to work at it. Jacksmelt and kingfish make very good bait - you don’t need anchovies or sardines to be productive.
We saw some spotty red tide today - not real bad. The swell is up just enough to chase the bait out and it turned off the halibut bite on the wharf, but halibut are still biting farther out. A number of perch came up off the wharf, with Harry landing a 12 inch barred perch (he’s today’s wharf highliner).

So - sorry for the lack of posts today - it’s not for a lack of fish - just a lack of vigilance.
Here’s Mike and Frank and Jerry with today’s catch off the Ono. The rockfish - among which is the most awesomely colored vermillion I have ever seen (I’m not Ed) - were caught off the main Santa Cruz reef. The halibut was caught off Soquel point. They were using live anchovies from Bocci - all the bait has gone into hiding on the ocean today.
The seabass went into hiding as well - no sightings at all. It is a big bay though - they’re out there somewhere.
Several other private boats had halibut today - mostly in the 15 to 18 pound class. And there was the radio fish we mentioned earlier. The Capitola halibut were caught off Soquel point.
One more day for boat bucks - hope to see you tomorrow. |

Just in over the radio, someone said they landed a 35 pound halibut off natural bridges. He also said he had a few shakers on.

John C caught this 15 pound flattie using live sardines off Soquel point. Both Josh and Dan had halibut on the hook over there earlier today - both lost them. Good time to spend some boat bucks. |

Ed just brought in two seabass. They’re still around and plentiful if you manage not to spook them. The “little one” is 27 pounds, the larger one is 36, both caught off the cement ship. They do seem to like that area for some reason. Probably the bait - sardines are still all over the place. Whales too. And Kurtis saw a great white shark this morning, but it left before he could get a picture. Bummer. |

Rafael scored this beautiful 26 pounder off Soquel point today fishing live sardines. People are getting the sardines all over the place, though they’re mostly between New Brighton and the cement ship. Whales were feeding on them from close to the beach out to two miles out.The whales put on a really nice show while Ed and Kurtis were trolling around looking for seabass. Kurtis scored three, two over 40 pounds, one small (legal) one. Dan got one little (legal) one, and Ed got two small (legal) ones. They saw seven schools of big fish out there.Ed caught and released a 12 pound silver salmon flylining a live sardine. A couple of the rentals also had the pleasure of releasing silvers today. Pretty nice to see them swim away. |
