Capitola: Darn Glen points the way

Jiyoung and black rock cod
Here’s Jiyoung with her black rock cod! She caught it out off of Adam’s reef next to Darn Glen’s marker buoy using squid on a surf leader setup. Nice catch Jiyoung!

Capitola: Nice wharf fishing!

Amado and barred perch
Here’s Amado with a couple of really nice barred perch. He caught these at the surf line using shrimp on a couple of hooks. He said he had a bigger one get off, so he’s getting more bait to go back to it.

Capitola: Definitely worth having boats out

Joe Kegi and limit of grass cod
Here’s Joe and Kegi showing off part of their double limit of grass cod. They caught these today using squid at the Capitola reef. Sure is nice to have boats out.

The wind has come up a bit out of the northwest, but otherwise it’s a great day.

Capitola: Lots of persistence equals dinner

Matt and flounder
So - if you look only casually, you might not notice that Matt’s hands actually appear larger than his head in this photo due to the fact that he’s holding it as far away from himself as possible so as to, um, accentuate the size of the fish.

This is Matt’s catch of the day - a nice 22.5 inch halibut. He caught it inside the yellow buoy in 57 feet of water using live sardines. He managed to jig up some bait straight off the wharf in 80 feet of water, but it took a while to find. Bait’s kinda thin out there right now.

Otherwise - beautiful day on the water, not many boats out. Hopefully we’ll get some more out this weekend so we can get a better sense of the situation.

Capitola: We had a really nice picture for today, but…

… gremlins took it.

If we had that picture. you’d see Bayrad and his daughters (who had a great time) with a dozen brown rock cod and some mackerel. Ed went out on the shore boat today and caught a couple dozen 8 inch mackerel mixed in with sardines.

If the gremlins had not had a party with our camera, you’d also be seeing a photo of Luke (from yesterday) and his brother Larson holding up a 12 pound guitar skate that Ed hooked from the wharf and which the boys then reeled in. They also got some perch including a nice 10 inch black using shrimp. Wharf fishing is not too bad right now.

We’re hoping that the mackerel come in around the wharf. This time of year if the water temperature is right, we get a pretty decent amount of mackerel around here, and since Ed found them just outside of the marina today, it’s probably safe to say “there’s mackerel here” right now. If the fates go our way, there’ll be a nice mackerel harvest coming up shortly.

Santa Cruz: Hey you guys!! LOOK!

Larry had a halibut on and about halfway up when he decided to tell everyone “Hey look at me! Look - I’m reeling this big’n up here!!!” - which - of course - at that point the fish decided differently and spit the hook out. He was bummed. Not the fish, Larry. Anyway, he was fishing up around Davenport. Other than this, no one else we know got a halibut bite today. Kurtis however came in with two legal lings from the same area. Everyone was fishing live sardines, which Bocci still has last we heard.

The wind came up quickly today (as it did yesterday), so they didn’t have long to fish before they headed back in.

Capitola: Rock fish off the wharf!

Luke and grass cod
Here’s Luke with a grass cod he caught today in combination with a couple nice black perch. He got them all around the midline of the wharf using shrimp on a surf leader setup. It was pretty good for perch on the wharf today in general - Andy, Harry, and Don did pretty well.

There were some anchovies off the floating dock early this morning. Even though Ed saw pelicans diving in the marina and on the outside, he didn’t see anything worth throwing the net on during the day. Jigging might be a tactic worth trying.

Santa Cruz: Consistent rock cod fishing

We’ve only had a few boats out in Santa Cruz as well over the last few days. Reports we’ve had were that boats were coming in with limits of blacks and blues. Larry got into a bunch of undersized ling cod and a few rock cod at the whistle buoy - that’s the best first-hand account we have.

Oh - and Boccie scored big on the sardines - he has a bunch of large ones in his receiver so there’s plenty of bait to be had one way or another.

Capitola: Halibut in Capitola reef

John and John C and halibut
John C and his friend John went fishing the Capitola reef today, and John C ended up bringing in this 8 pound flattie using swim baits and anchovies (to be honest we forgot to ask).

Rock cod has been kind of off and on on the outside reefs (unless you are Darn Glen), but it’s been most productive with a mix of halibut and rock cod in 12-20 feet of water along the edges of the kelp beds. We have not had very many boats out, so we don’t really have a very good sampling of what’s actually going on. Fact is, people haven’t been fishing Capitola lately, so it’s kind of an unknown.

The bait is still out there - sardines were in the marina early in the morning, and Larry had no problem picking them up in 30 feet of water just outside the marina.

Santa Cruz: The Pretzel Man Gets One For His Effort

P9160302
Things are pretty quiet down here today with only two rentals out and 3 private boats, but Crazy John managed to scratch up this hefty 20lb butt off of west cliff.

We will keep you posted if anything else comes in.

Santa Cruz: Live bait not required

Ed and halibut
Here’s Ed with a 19 pound flattie. He spent 45 minutes jigging up sardines in 70-80 feet of water out past Adams reef, but as it turned out it only took frozen squid to hook this one up. He was fishing in 45 feet of water west of the wharf.

Capitola: The happiest guys we saw all day

James and friend and grass cod and kingfish
Here’s James and his friend with their catch of the day - a kingfish and a grass cod. Seems like grass cod are on the bite these days. They caught the grass cod off Capitola reef using pieces of squid on small hooks, and the kingfish towards New Brighton using the same.

It was a pretty nice day - overcast but calm in the morning, then sunny and calm. Most boats came in with fish (we only had 8 out, so that’s definitely a good sign). There were a couple of boats fishing off Capitola reef in the kelp that came in with some legal lings as well.

Overall things are looking up - swell is *definitely* *for* **sure** down. “They” say that it’s supposed to come back up. We will believe it when we see it. For now, we are very happy.
