Capitola: Rock fish rule the roost

James Miguel Miguelalito and grass and brown rock fish
Here are our highliners today as far as volume is concerned – James, Miguel, and Miguelalito. They came in with at least 20 rock fish including these grass and brown cod. They were fishing Capitola reef using anchovies on a surf leader setup. Nice catch!

Our boats averaged three rock fish per boat today, and there were five legal halibut brought in today as well. Bait was very scarce, but later in the day there were a lot of pelicans diving between New Brighton and the ship — then it petered out. After that, there were some pelicans diving in the marina — but that’s all done as well.

About the only glimmer of hope we have on the bait situation is that last night Mike saw a big bait ball move into the marina after we had closed. Maybe we’ll get lucky and get some of that again tonight.

There will be one more post yet tonight – nothing major – we’re just having some logistic problems with the camera at the moment.

[edit]

Looks like we’ll post that tomorrow – sorry.

Capitola: Hydrobike Harvey gets back on the horse

Hydrobike Harvey and grass rock fish
Here’s dauntless Hydrobike Harvey and his catch for the day – a grass rock fish. You might recall last year’s little incident where Harvey explored (and exceeded) the outer limits of hydrobike stability. Well, today he outdid himself as, aside from the grass cod, he also caught and released a small flattie. He was of course on a hydrobike and was using swim baits on the edge of the kelp bed. Congratulations Harvey!

Capitola: A good day for firsts

Jeff and halibut and ling
Here’s Jeff with his first halibut ever – plus a nice ling cod. He was fishing channel island swim baits off the cement wall off Soquel point – just at edge of kelp bed. Jeff happens to also be today’s highliner with biggest fish! Congratulations Jeff!

Capitola: Tristan scores a skate

Tristan and skate
Here’s Tristan with an 8 pound skate – Tristan’s first fish ever! He caught it mid-range on the wharf by the gate using a surf leader setup with squid.

Not too much else off the wharf today aside from Sheriff Larry’s mysterious huge scary fish. He saw something huge swam under his bobber and he said he’s never seen anything like it. He guessed it must have weighed in the area of 100 lbs.
