Capitola: So yeah you prolly wanna reserve some fishing time…

Nguen and family and brown and jacksmelt
Nguen and his family caught three or four brown rock fish and a jacksmelt fishing out by the mile reef today. They were using squid on surf leader setups. His daughter got the biggest fish and was grinning ear to ear.

This was the typical catch today – most boats got a variety of blues, mackerel, browns, jacksmelt, and sardines. It was, in other words, a great day to take the kids out fishing.

Ed has expressed – rather fervently – that he’d really *really* like to be out there enjoying water instead of shuffling boats around. But he gets his weekend starting tomorrow. If, like Ed, you are looking at all this and thinking “Darn – I really really wish I was out there instead!”, you should strongly consider printing out some boat bucks and getting on down here sometime this week – looks like the fishing is good at the moment.

Capitola: Someone threw the wharf switch on as well

Sophia and redtail perch
Here’s Sophia with the redtail perch she caught midpoint on the wharf this afternoon. She got it on a bait jig with some squid bits. Congratulations Sophia!

Also off the wharf today we saw a decent eight pound striper down in the surf line on a live sardine. The tail looked like it got munched on – there was a halibut in the surf line on a live sardine that also looked like something’s snack.

Capitola: Flatties flatties everywhere.

Steve and halibut
Steve caught this legal flattie off the mile reef using dead anchovies on a halibut rig. Later in the day Kurtis hooked up a beautiful 20 pounder, which we’d have a picture of but he’s camera shy. He had a triple hookup (!) but two of them got off. So – definitely some halibut action all over the place.

Santa Cruz: Did you know you can google for Darn Glenn?

Darn Glenn and 34 pound halibut
You can! There’s a reason for that. See – Darn Glenn has a few lucky stars named after him or something. Here’s an example:

He hopped in a rental, fished up some sardines, headed over to the mile buoy, and did one drift. One. And ho boy guess what? THIRTY FOUR POUNDS!! Yeah baby! Word is that his son Josh will be showing up here with something special later today as well.

Sheriff Larry is dizzy with envy. As are we all.

Congratulations Glenn!!

Santa Cruz: Ling mania

Rick John lings
So yesterday our Santa Cruz store reported (kinda too late for publishing) that they’d seen some really decent numbers of lings come in on the rentals there. As if to prove the point, Sheriff Larry took his son in law and a friend out to the main reef in Santa Cruz this morning. They wrangled up a couple of decent ling fishing live sardines on halibut rigs.

Capitola: Soquel point decides to give up some beauties

Mike John Eric browns
Not only do we have every boat out, but it looks like we’re going to see some pretty nice stuff coming in later. Here are Mike, John, and Eric with a few of the two limits of *nice* quality browns they caught today. They were fishing off Soquel point using anchovies on shrimp fly rigs. Nice(!) catch you guys.

Capitola: Wharf is pretty fun for the kids today

Sam jacksmelt
Aside from the angel shark, the wharf seems to be producing primarily jacksmelt this morning. Here’s Sam with a jacksmelt he caught at the end of wharf using frozen anchovies on a surf leader about an hour ago.

Ed came across some sardines outside marina (and a few inside) as well this morning – they’re not near the wharf — yet.

Capitola: Line em up!

Nick and angel shark
Looks like were going to get to post a whole bunch of entries today – we have every single boat out on the water here! Some early news – here’s Nick with the angel shark he caught and released this morning. He was fishing with frozen anchovies at end of wharf when this monster clamped onto his hook. It was at least 30 pounds – probably 5.5 feet in length.
