Capitola: Dumb fish think it is nice out or something

Pete white seabass thresher
Holy cow. Despite what appears to be really not the best weather for fishing, we’re kinda having a banner day here. Pete and Dan went out and fished Soquel point today and reeled in a couple of nice surprises. Pete in particular got these two beauties, a 32 inch white seabass and a small thresher shark. They fishing in about 40 feet of water using live sardines on halibut rigs. They were fishing on the bottom but saw some marks on the fish finder and tried shallow instead. Good thing – wow – nice catch!

Rumor has it that someone’s been doing well with swim baits in the same area at the same depth. It’s kind of a radio-fish level of confidence here, but Pete’s trophies here maybe lend a bit more import to it.

So weather wise – really not the greatest (you would think) for fishing – swell is up (a 3-4 footer with a 15 second period out of the soutwest), and it’s been breezy out of the west. And yet – here we sit with these nice fish. Hope it holds together.

Bait wise all the bait that was down by the ship has gone missing. But, where single pelicans have been diving, there’s been sardines and mackerel. Basically scattered schools in small balls from outside the marina to the mile reef. Watch for the pelicans if you want to jig some up.

Capitola: Someone must have rung the dinner bell

Pavel and striper
Wow – nice wharf action all of the sudden! Here’s Pavel with a full on 16 pound striper he just caught midrange on the wharf! He was using a live shiner under a bobber. He got a good fight out of it, then Ed hopped in the shore boat which became the landing spot for the fish. Right at the same time, Roy hooked up a 17.5″ fish on a live sardine just a little further down toward the end. He released it cuz it was short, but again a pretty nice fight.

Capitola: Poseidon gift wraps special present for Myron

Myron and birthday catch
Happy Birthday Myron!

Myron’s getting the hang of this – he went out this morning and landed a flattie on the first cast!! He was fishing Capitola reef using live sardines on a halibut rig (he jigged the sardines up yesterday). This is Myron’s second-ever Halibut and by his account it was a pretty fun catch. He initially tried to net it, but it got out. He figured he’d lost the fish but he left the drag on and the fish played out some line with the hook still set. Second time he brought it in he used a gaff. The brown (check out the size!) came in on the *second* cast using the same setup.
