Packed with tons of people and buckets of mackerel. Fisherman lined the wharf from one end to the next, elbow to elbow catching bait by the buckets. Only 8 boats out today, everyone brought in alittle something sorry camera was too busy capturing Woodies. We’ll we will try to get FISH pictures tomorrow

Capitola: We should probably put a bounty out on it or something

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 76945 * You need to zoom in on this photo to get a proper sense of it, but we had *lots* of people fishing on the wharf today (it was a really nice warm day).

There was a mystery fish hooked up down close to the beach on a live shiner. It got wrapped up in some kelp and got away. But it was something with some girth. It wasn’t a sea lion, cuz it never breached. We’re thinking it might have been a leopard shark or a halibut. Let your imagination run wild cuz we’ll never know for sure. It was the only big fish we’ve heard of so far today.

For most folks, there have been a lot of jacksmelt and perch biting on mostly shrimp on bait jigs and small hooks on surf leaders. That’s all we have now, but the day is still kinda young for wharf fishing – there may well be some late bite.

Santa Cruz: For best halibut bite, sacrifice a chicken

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 76941 * Guess what. Just guess. Give you a minute. [tic toc] Yep. Kurtis got a huge fish!! It’s kind of looking like his stars got super-glued into the “awesome things” alignment or something – man!Today the larger halibut were biting in front of the harbor as they have been for the last few days. The huge tide has been causing some pretty hefty currents in the Capitola area, and that’s been freaking the halibut out, so they’ve either moved or the ones near Capitola are hiding right now.

Kurtis went out late today – after noon – and landed this one on the fifth drift using a live sardine. He tried fishing Capitola, but the drift was so fast with the current that it was pretty much a lost cause.

We did however see four legal halibut come in off some Capitola boats – one off a rental, three off of privates. One came in from Soquel point off O’Neil’s, one came in off the mile reef, and two came in off Capitola reef. They were using various lures – swim baits, halibut rigs with anchovies and live sardines.

For most people this was a slow day – we had a few boats do ok with rock cod which they caught off the point, Adam’s reef, and the mile reef. But on whole boats were lucky to get a few king fish. The huge tide is the culprit in all this – it’ll pass in a few days and things should pick up again.

Capitola: Great day for the regulars

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 76938 * Yalin is one of our regulars here – he and his friends come just about every week to fish Capitola reef. This week he got this nice grass cod using anchovies on a surf leader, and a barrel of jacksmelt. We have been negligent in getting Yalin’s picture on the site here, so he was pretty happy when Ed whipped out the camera this week. See you next time Yalin!

Capitola: Adan lands his first halibut!

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 76935 * So Adan had quite a day today – here’s his lifetime first halibut! He caught this 30 incher fishing Capitola reef with a split tail white scampi (1 oz head). So you can see from his smile here that he was pretty happy – we have to say, a lot gets lost when you try to cram all that happiness into two dimensions.
