You need to zoom in on this photo to get a proper sense of it, but we had *lots* of people fishing on the wharf today (it was a really nice warm day).
There was a mystery fish hooked up down close to the beach on a live shiner. It got wrapped up in some kelp and got away. But it was something with some girth. It wasn’t a sea lion, cuz it never breached. We’re thinking it might have been a leopard shark or a halibut. Let your imagination run wild cuz we’ll never know for sure. It was the only big fish we’ve heard of so far today.
For most folks, there have been a lot of jacksmelt and perch biting on mostly shrimp on bait jigs and small hooks on surf leaders. That’s all we have now, but the day is still kinda young for wharf fishing - there may well be some late bite. |

Guess what. Just guess. Give you a minute. [tic toc] Yep. Kurtis got a huge fish!! It’s kind of looking like his stars got super-glued into the “awesome things” alignment or something - man!Today the larger halibut were biting in front of the harbor as they have been for the last few days. The huge tide has been causing some pretty hefty currents in the Capitola area, and that’s been freaking the halibut out, so they’ve either moved or the ones near Capitola are hiding right now.
Kurtis went out late today - after noon - and landed this one on the fifth drift using a live sardine. He tried fishing Capitola, but the drift was so fast with the current that it was pretty much a lost cause.
We did however see four legal halibut come in off some Capitola boats - one off a rental, three off of privates. One came in from Soquel point off O’Neil’s, one came in off the mile reef, and two came in off Capitola reef. They were using various lures - swim baits, halibut rigs with anchovies and live sardines.
For most people this was a slow day - we had a few boats do ok with rock cod which they caught off the point, Adam’s reef, and the mile reef. But on whole boats were lucky to get a few king fish. The huge tide is the culprit in all this - it’ll pass in a few days and things should pick up again. |

Yalin is one of our regulars here - he and his friends come just about every week to fish Capitola reef. This week he got this nice grass cod using anchovies on a surf leader, and a barrel of jacksmelt. We have been negligent in getting Yalin’s picture on the site here, so he was pretty happy when Ed whipped out the camera this week. See you next time Yalin!

So Adan had quite a day today - here’s his lifetime first halibut! He caught this 30 incher fishing Capitola reef with a split tail white scampi (1 oz head). So you can see from his smile here that he was pretty happy - we have to say, a lot gets lost when you try to cram all that happiness into two dimensions. |

Darrell caught this grass cod out at the end of the wharf using an anchovy on a surf rig. What Darrell tapped into here is the little colony of rock fish that live under the wharf. They aren’t out and about all the time - just when the mood strikes them. That’s why you don’t see a lot of them coming up off the wharf all the time. So Darrell’s enthusiasm is well justified. Congratulations Darrell - you found them!
We did just get a bunch of one day fishing licenses, so the panic post from earlier today isn’t such a big deal. If you get one somewhere else, fine, but we have them - don’t worry.
Also - we have some unreserved boats here - come early if you want to get in on one of those.
Otherwise - here’s to a good tomorrow - hopefully we’ll be posting lots of pics. |

Walleye have been kinda off the hook today - here’s Thomas with one of them. He caught this one right next to the sink, but they’ve been coming up all over the place along with shiners, mackerel, and tiny little tomcods. They were biting on bait jigs with bits of shrimp. Pretty much any kid that was fishing on the wharf today was a pretty happy camper with all this action. It’d be nice if these hung around for a while - they’re fun for the whole family. |

We haven’t seen Joe in a while, but that definitely hasn’t messed with his ability to fish this wharf! This here is a 9 pound striper! He caught this using a live sardine under a bobber close to the beach on the east side of the wharf. Welcome back Joe! |

K well I don’t have enough space to spell it out in the title but yeah you guessed it: Darn Glenn again.
Here he is with his 5 foot long stringer of fish. Most people did not do this well today. But of course Glenn is not most people. So let’s examine Darn Glenn’s day, maybe we can learn from him.
He fished all day. Most of the day he tried for halibut off Soquel point. This was not a fruitful exercise except for one just legal one which you see here - it bit a live sardine. As the day came near to a close, Glenn pushed the fail safe button (well, for him anyway) and went for the rock cod. All of these came from Soquel point and they all bit on swim baits.
Once again Glenn, we are in awe. |

Ugh - we’ve had a shipping error and have run out of fishing licenses at both our locations. Please purchase them before you come down for your boat! You can get them at a Longs Drugs, Outdoor World, Kmart, Bayside Marine, and most sporting good stores. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sorry folks - I had the Boccie Boy Bait troller all set up but I neglected to actually activate it, so today’s report is quite tardy. For the record - he has bait! Large sardines.
