For those of you who might not have heard, this Saturday July 4th is a Free Fishing Day - no fishing license is required to fish from a boat or beach all day that day! If you’ve always wanted to give fishing a try, this Saturday is definitely a good day for that. Call and reserve a boat soon - they’ll likely go fast!
Note: fishing from the wharf is *always* free to children and adults alike. There’s an exception to the fish licensing rules that applies to public wharves on the coast. If you just want to fish from the wharf, you never need a license.

Jim should probably start playing the lottery or something. . It was his first time out in his boat this year, and he left around 12:30 as he had to charge his battery before he left. We went out to O’Neils and tried some frozen chovies, but had no joy. Then a ball of sardines floated under his boat - he jigged some of those up and next thing you know there’s a 26 inch halibut in his boat. Pretty smooth dude!
We only had one rental out today - they fished Capitola reef and a few other spots and came in with a few rock fish. It is difficult to extrapolate from that, so I will not try
The forecast continues to show a very small intermittent SW component to the wind in the outside forecast, but that’s supposed to be gone by Saturday. The reality of it is this: the swell appears to be subsiding substantially, and the gloominess seems to be leaving us. All nice trends if they continue.
Remember tomorrow is the last day for boat bucks this week - if you wanna play hookie and get some fish tomorrow’s the day! |

Megan got in on the wharf action today - here she is holding one of the several jacksmelt she caught. She also reeled in some perch, all of this between the beach and the gate on the east side. She was using a surf leader setup with some small number 8 hooks and bits of shrimp.
It was a good day for perch and kingfish off wharf today - pretty much anyone who was fishing the wharf was catching stuff. |
