Capitola: How far would YOU go for a case of tuna fish?

Kurtis and Dan again went on a 80 mile boat ride today and have these seven fish to show for it. Well - and more stories of mako sharks - Kurtis saw one but could not make it bite. They’re switing to halibut tomorrow - they are “over it”.

Capitola: Decent Summer Day of Fishing

Here are Anthony, James, and Kirkland with the grass cod they caught off Capitola reef today. All the fish they caught bit on swim baits. This was a pretty typical catch on the boats aside from the few that brought in giants. Lots of boats said they had something big on but got spooled or snapped off. Most likely these were threshers - they’re definitely around.

It was trickier to find bait today - once again pinhead anchovies in shallow, and sardines and mackerel out a bit further in 40-50 feet of water.

The swell remains very very down - it’s not completely gone, but the halibut that we’ve seen today is evidence that it’s not bothering the groundfish any.

Otherwise - beatiful day - overcast in the morning, sunny around noon through til now - wind picked up out of the west about 1 pm. Forecast calls for the same tomorrow - that’d certainly be nice.

Capitola: Making lemonade from lemons — only with huge fish!

Antonette and her friend cashed in on the “one big fish per boat” trend today with this 27 pound thresher shark! They caught it fishing dead anchovies in 50 feet of water off New Brighton. There was all kinds of unusual drama associated with the catch: Ed had gone out to help them start the motor, but when he arrived they were fully engaged with fighting this fish. Ed coached them through it - they fought it for a total of 30 minutes, and they finally got it into the boat with a gaff. Turns out the problem with the motor was just that they weren’t pulling hard enough. Hehe - fate works in mysterious ways sometimes. The rest of the day was slow but enjoyable for them - the caught a few odds and ends - an octopus, a mackerel, and a perch. Beautiful fish Antonette!

That O’Neil’s - it’s got something going today doesn’t it? Here’s Phong with the only thing his boat hooked up on all day (besides a few rock cod). This ladies and gentlemen is a 28.5 pound flattie! This one bit around noon today on live sardines on a halibut rig. Beautiful fish Phong - bon apetite!

Capitola: A little something for everyone

Thomas and Madeline had fun with their mom and dad today fishing out by the mile reef a bit towards O’Neil’s. They were using bait jigs and caught a whole bunch of jacksmelt. Dad had something big on - most likely a thrEsher. It kept on going and took all his line right off the reel. So - a fun day for the whole family. See you next time guys!

Capitola: Rapper tops the charts!

Chris and Mr. Fish Rap himself Allen Bushnell scored big off of their kayaks today. They were fishing in 35 feet of water off O’Neil’s using live mackerel. Chris caught a 9 pounder and Allen cranked in a hefty 22 pounder! He took the direct approach and just gaffed his fish right at the boat. *Nice* catch you guys.

Capitola: A break from all the perch

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful (and busy) day today. The perch are still plentiful on the wharf here, but Tae just broke the mold with this 28 inch halibut. He just caught off the end of the wharf using a live shiner on a three way setup. This is a very good sign. Nice catch Tae!
