Santa Cruz: Turns out there is such a thing as too much bait

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 78560 * Ken is our highliner today with these two flatties. He took his boat up above the Santa Cruz lighthouse and fished with live mackerel and sardines and managed to land these two. For everyone else out of Capitola today it was not such a good story. We will now attempt some “diagnosis” of this:

So – bait wise, we’ve now got sardines stacked from the top of the water column all the way down to the bottom, from Rio Del Mar to the lighthouse in 30 to 50 feet of water. This is a *lot* of bait, and there’s a pretty good chance that fish that were biting yesterday are now completely full to the point of bursting and the last thing they want is another darned fish. That, plus everyone and their mom (and in a few cases literally with their mom) were on top of the spot off O’Neil’s that was so productive yesterday. There were a few halibut caught there today, but that’s about it.

Otherwise boats that caught fish caught rock cod, small halibut, and lingcod, and these were mostly caught up off Soquel point. We don’t have photos of these because – it was really weird, but **everyone** seemed to come in with their rentals at the same time, and it was just frantic on the deck here so – sorry no pics. Quite a few boats – mostly those that stayed around O’Neil’s all day – ended up flying the skunk flag. Bummer!

But – it was another beautiful day in paradise here – lots of smiles and lots of fun. There was a decent band playing on the wharf and we’re now all looking forward to some awesome eating as lots of folks are grilling out tonight. Should be some fireworks too, though – of course – they’re illegal. Isn’t it weird how that works?

Capitola: ONeil juice keeps on flowing

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 78553 * The good luck continues to pool around the water off O’Neil’s today. Here’s Colin with the 39.5 pound thresher shark that he just brought in. He jigged up some mackerel around the first kelp bed in front of the wharf and then headed over towards O’Neil’s. This one bit in 30-40 feet of water on a halibut rig with a live mackerel just on the bottom. And it was a 45 minute fight – awesome catch Colin!
