Capitola: Great time to be on the water

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 81241 * Here’s Sam with a 28 inch flattie. He caught it off Capitola reef using a live sardine on a halibut rig.

This fish and Larry’s are kind of the exception to the rule today. We had 14 boats out, and most of those caught a few rock cod each. Our best explanation is: good luck. Obviously there are flatties about – it’s just a question of getting them to bite. You know. Like fishing.

Bait wise, Ed got his birthday wish and was able to finally throw his net over some decent balls of bait off the wharf! I caught about 150 sardines in one toss (though – he admits he was a bit rusty – a few practice figure 8′s came first. He also had one toss where he would have had a completely full net were it not for the fact that a sea lion decided to bite through (and hole) the net and have itself a free feast. Darn (!!!). But on whole – it’s a happy occasion. We have live bait in the tank – not a lot, but some. And if the bait continues doing what it’s doing we should have some on and off for a while. We hope.

Weather: paradise. There wasn’t even an easterly last night – just flat calm wind and seas, and it was even kinda warm at night. Today – a bit foggy in the morning, then just really nice in the lower 70s all day. Typical summer day here – can’t really ask for more.

Capitola: Hydrobike Harvey Rules the Shallows

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 81238 * And Hydrobike Harvey is entirely over last years little snafu! Here he is with his catch for today – a legal halibut. He caught it with a live sardine on a halibut rig right next to the swim buoy here in the marina. Nice! That’s saying quite a lot cuz he had to fish around the copious quantity of sea lions that have been enjoying the sardine feast around here. That, and certainly he got some decent close-up views of said sea lions in a feeding frenzy – it was probably a pretty exciting hydrobike day.

Capitola: Sheriff Larry Channels a Fish

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 81235 * Sheriff Larry got this one in front of O’Neil’s early this morning – probably around 8:00am – using a live sardine ona halibut rig. Normally Larry would wait patiently to launch his boat, but this morning he had a karmic emergency or something and pretty much claimed the head of the line. Looks like it was worth it – this here is today’s highliner at 27 pounds. This is his largest one this year, and obviously it’s large enough for him to pose with.

Capitola: And finally from last night…

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 81232 * We are having a senior moment here and have forgotten Armondo’s girlfriend’s name (who is pictured here). It’s Ed’s birthday – he’s older – we’ll forgive him. Anyway, she caught this one last night after Kurtis got his – this one is 25 (!!) pounds. They kept it in an ice chest last night cuz they wanted to be sure that they had a good picture of it. Understandable – this is a very nice fish!

Finally, last night Cigar Gary caught a 18 pound halibut on a pencil popper close to the jetty on the beach. No specific time – just “dark”.

Capitola: More from last night

After JoJo’s fish, there was still some striper action – Kurtis (pictured) and a few others hung around to see what they could fish up. Kurtis hooked a 12 pounder. And…..
