Capitola: Rafael gets his Lucky Buddha on
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 87127 * | Rafael (“The Lucky Buddha”) went out with Myron the Mariner when Myron got his second wind around 9:00am. They went back over by Spongebob and as Rafael was dropping his live sardine down he hooked up on this feisty 20 inch barred sand bass!! We don’t see these often – they’re more of a southern CA fish. But sometimes we see them up here when conditions are right. Today we had overcast skies and calm warm water in the morning, and it remained calm when the sun came out (and stayed calm as the water warmed). So – the upshot of it is it’s a pretty lucky thing to catch one of these around here. But this is why we consider it to be a pretty lucky thing to have Rafael on the boat. Sometimes he doesn’t catch anything – but just having him there is good enough to load up the lines with fish. This is true. Myron will attest to it. Looks like Rafael is going to have some real good eating tonight. Congratulations amigo!
It was a slow day for the rentals – only 5 boats out not including Myron’s. All of the rentals came back with a few rock cod, with sardines being the most commonly caught fish. Since late yesterday the water has been really flat – we haven’t seen it like this in a while. We hope that last swell was indeed the last swell of the season. If it stays down halibut fishing should get better. There is still a lot of bait in the marina. Today the morning was the time to catch sardines off the wharf. Later in the day they moved out to the first row of the marina and then pushed out toward the end. It’s popping around the stenographer’s boat as he types. Sea lions are back in ridiculously large force as well – we could stand to see fewer of them right around here but what can you do – that’s nature. |

Santa Cruz: Larry must have clicked his heels together this morning
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 87124 * | Woooo Hooooooooooooo!!! Sheriff Larry’s fantasy has come true. Well – one of them. Well – maybe two of them. First – he got his new bait tank, and it worked exactly as he had hoped. And he got to go fishing alone. So – he put a bunch of sardines in the new tank and hiked his butt up to his secret halibut stomping grounds and managed to hook up a couple flatties. These beauts are 22 and 13 pounds. The larger one isn’t exactly a beauty – it looks like maybe a sea lion got a bite into it, but hey – it’s a mess o fish! He almost got his limit today but the third one popped off and it was getting rough. Larry is a fair weather fisherman like Ed, so he skedaddled when the popcorn started popping. |

Capitola: The eternal question: Halibut or Halibuts?
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 87121 * | Toby caught this nine pount flatty OFF THE WHARF this morning around 10:30-11:00 a.m. He was using a live sardine on a halibut rig. JoJo the Magnificent caught one around the same time of day, but was too embarassed to have his picture taken with it – it was just legal. He’s got a bit of Sheriff Larry in him. |

Capitola: Stripedness continues to be a hazardous look here abouts
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 87118 * | Thomas and Dan caught this 20 inch striper on a life sardine under a bobber. They spent a good part of the early morning jigging bait by the fish tank, then hooked this striper in the surf around 9-10 a.m.. There appear to be plenty of stripers around – we missed at least one picture today but we know for sure at least one was caught. |

Capitola: Perch popping pretty prequently
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 87115 * | (It’s just that we really are proud of ourselves with that JoJo and the Pickled Popper thing….)
This is Bob with a hefty walleye perch he caught using a surf leader with chunks of shrimp. He was fishing by the sink just past the midline on the wharf. Lots of wharf news to come yet – hang on. |

Capitola: Myron the Mariner catches marine things
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 87112 * | Myron the Mariner caught his first legal lingcod today. Barely legal. Like by millimeters. Once he got it in he decided to release it anyway. But – still – nice catch for Myron. He caught it out by Spongebob using a live sardine on a halibut rig. While he was out there he managed to loose a halibut as well – pretty exciting first outing today. But as you’ll see, he marinered himself once more later today. |
