Capitola: Sorry Charlie – stubborn anglers win

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 89180 * Our local fleet braved some pretty nasty seas about 50 miles out from here and wrangled up some nice albacore in the process. Today was really not as nice out there as it has been the last several days. We’re probably looking at the end of the current tuna bite because of it (though odds are good that tuna will be coming in for the next couple months). We heard some boats actually deciding to turn around today due to the chop – these three were pretty determined though. Beautiful catch you guys – congratulations.

On the wharf today it was bait again. Bait bait bait. And one undersized flatty – short by a maddening 1/4 inch. But – still – nooooo problem catching the bait – it just practically climbs up your line. We saw lots of smiling faces, so the lack of big fish doesn’t seem to be concerning many people.

Weather – well – it was kinda gloomy today – lots of smoke drifted in in the morning (that blew away after a couple hours). Then it got kinda foggy, then sunny, then foggy – and now it’s really foggy. Not really sure what is going to happen tomorrow but stuff usually happens in threes or fours around here so wouln’t be surprised with a repeat.

Capitola: Fish return from brief vacation and start biting stuff again

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 89177 * Yeee Ha! Joe, Travis, and Art scored big time on a rental today with a triple halibut hookup! They were fishing way inside of Spongebob along the edge of the kelp towards New Brighton. They were using live sardines on halibut rigs, and the biting started happening in the afternoon. They tried a bunch of other places but just had a few rock cod. The spot where they caught these was Ed’s suggestion. The trick with these smaller fish (they’re all in the 22-24 inch range) is to use smaller sardines – 4-5 inches. You can usually find them inside the bait ball and closer to the surface.

We had five rentals out in total, two of four remaining boats did very well using sardines on bait jigs – they came in with a dozen rock fish between the two boats (plus quite a few sardines). Another of the rentals – dad and daughter – caught a 3 foot long dog shark which pretty obviously made her day. The fifth boat got skunked – bummer. But overall definitely an improvement from the last couple of days.

Santa Cruz: Older brother shows how it is done

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 89174 * Here is Larry’s brother Bill with the other half of the Larry’s secret spot’s take for the day. This one is a 12 pounder – and he caught it with the same sort of bait. Larry admits that when it comes to fishing, he learned everything he knows from his elder brother Bill so this catch is no surprise. Congratulations Bill!

Santa Cruz: There is more than one mystery spot around here

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 89170 * Sheriff Larry is doing a tap dance right now – he FINALLY caught a reasonably decent sized fish!! This here is half of his boat’s catch – a 20 pound flattie. He was fishing his secret spot – all we know about it is west-ish. He was using live sardines which he happily netted out of his fancy new bait tank. Nice catch Larry – good luck with that 35 pounder.
