Santa Cruz: Ed lays bet on blindfolded bullseye
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96961 * | Ryan and Chris took their boat up to Natural Bridges to see if they could find one of those big northern flatties Bayside has been talking about. No monsters, but they are happy with this legal one. They said this 26 incher put up a respectable bite after it munched on their live sardine.
Otherwise, it was a slow day for both rentals and fishing off of them. We saw a few rock cod, once again off Capitola reef. Out of seven boats out, three came back skunked. There’s still a decent dolphin show going on however, so at least there’s entertainment. We know there are some scattered schools of white seabass somewhere in the 35 miles between Davenport and Monterey, so Ed is about to throw darts at a map to plan his fishing for tomorrow. Aside from some big flatties off of Davenport, that’s about all we’ve heard of lately. |

Capitola: It is a floating salad out there!
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96958 * | A.J. caught this leopard shark a bit later in the day a bit closer to the beach using a live sardine.
Bait finally did come in late this afternoon. People where having a hard time catching them as they were kind of scattered and there was a lot of loose kelp floating around the wharf. The majority of the bait hung around just outside the marina most of the day. Two small (undersized) halibut were caught and released close to the beach this afternoon. Other than the two sharks, that’s it (though there’s always the possibility of an evening bite). |

Capitola: A quick photo before returning to the pond
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96955 * | This is Ryan with a leopard shark he caught off the end of the wharf today using a halibut rig with whole dead squid. This one bit around 9:00 am. There’s one more… |

Capitola: Hope tomorrow is like today!
Shi and Zhang were part of the same group from the previous post – they were fishing in the same area but caught a bit more of the same sort of stuff – rock crab and assorted rock fish.
We had 13 boats out today, most of them caught rock cod. It was a good day for fishing around Capitola reef. Some of the other boats caught some larger fish but they were in a hurry to get them back to the dinner table so we didn’t get photos. On the wharf, things were a bit slower today ’til about 12:30pm because we had some swell wrapping around into the bay from the northwest messing things up a bit. Once things got going, people were catching sardines fairly well for a while, though it seems to have slowed down again. We didn’t see anything big again today, though Ed saw Nguyen loose a decent sized one to a sea lion about 7:00pm last night. Through the grape vine we heard that he caught a 22 inch striper later on that evening along and that someone else landed one as well. Weather was amazing today – quite warm in the morning ’til a breeze picked up, then sunny and breezy the rest of the day. Right now the breeze has laid down a bit again. Tomorrow is supposed to be something like today. |

Capitola: Small fish but lots of catching
Song and Evan and a few of their buddies who were camera shy did very well fishing off Bomborra reef today. They were in a group of three boats with a total of 12 people fishing. Most fish were small, but they had at least a couple of limits. Here you can see some of their catch – rock crab and some grass cod, browns, and a few black and yellows. |

Capitola: Thanks for the chow mein Perry – have a fish!
Perry took his skiff out to Soqeul point and caught this 11 pound halibut this morning around 8:00am. He was using a live sardine on a halibut rig out a little way from the kelp bed. |

Capitola: Still a bit left in this season it seems
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96515 * | Felix and his buddy Benito were fishing off Bomborra reef today and landed this nice 28 inch flatty and two limits of mixed rock cod that included grass, black and yellows, and one small cabezon. They were using surf leader setups with chunks of sardines in about 12 feet of water in a rental.
Two other rentals were out – one caught an undersized flattie and a couple rock cod which he released, the other caught a few grass cod which he also let go. The second boat spotted a bunch of small but legal white seabass in the same area Felix and Benito were fishing. Sardines are wide open all up and down the wharf and all through the marina. We saw a few mackerel as well, but that’s it – nothing big. |

Capitola: But could you really have even fit two on a kayak Ken?
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96296 * | Ken went out about 1.5 miles on the Bay in his kayak today and enticed this 40 pound white seabass to bite on some some frozen squid! He said he lost another one in the same area – he didn’t get to see it as it broke off right away due to a too-tight drag. Darn. Well – not so darn – 40 pounds in nice!! |

Capitola: Jim does his alma mater proud!
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96041 * | Jim here is an old customer – he’s up on the old wall of fame from 15 years ago. He saw our web site and brought down a boat buck in hope of hooking up a flattie. Not so much flattie wise, but he was fishing the edge of the kelp bed between the wharf and the point. He caught this 28 incher and another decent sized one along with some heft grass cod. He was going to let them all go, but this one was bleeding from its gills so he kept it. It’s good to see him come back and to hear he found our site!
On the wharf, the sardines once again are abundant – it was pandemonium this afternoon with dolphins, sea lions, cormorants, seagulls, and pelicans all working the bait and sardines flopping on the deck all over the place. No halibut off the wharf today yet however. There’s still some light left, so who knows. Weather wise – pretty nice – foggy in the morning but it burned off early and stayed warm and sunny ’til the easterly came up – really still kind of a nice summer pattern ‘cept with shorter days. We’re supposed to get another week of this – here’s to hoping. |

Capitola: Can a boat have an attitude??
* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 96038 * | Nate and Jamie went out on Brian’s boat again and came in early with this 24 inch halibut. He caught this one down by New Brighton by the edge of the kelp using a live sardine on a halibut rig. Brian is probably all beside himself wondering what the heck is up with his boat’s juju – favoring the guests and all
Cuz see, they just came in with another one, same size, from the same place. hehe. Oh well Brian – it’ll turn around for you sometime |
