Capitola: Thank you Tim!

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 92663 * Tim found the picture in question – the stenographer had moved it into the derby album by mistake. Here now in full color is Alana and her friends P.J., Tim, and Rosie with Alana’s first ever halibut.  Congratulations Alana!

Capitola: Chip holds out for one last gasp

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 92711 * A late surprise – John just caught this 10 pound striper – his second striper off the wharf in as many weeks. He caught this one just inside the gate (toward the beach) on the west side of the wharf and was using a live sardine under a bobber. Last night as we were leaving John also caught two giant bat rays near the bait tank.

Capitola: Old chip crumbles under strain, Ed to follow

Double triple dang darn dang. Our best picture of the day – with our highliners – regular readers – has gone to the bit bucket in the sky. We need a new chip. We are soooo sorry. And yes, this is becoming an old song. We will get a new chip tomorrow!!!

The photo we are missing is a picture of Alana and her friends P.J., Tim, and Rosie with their halibut – a nice 24 incher. Even though she didn’t want to hold the fish she cracked a big smile and then we lost the pic.   Arrrrrggghhhhh! They caught it off the edge of the kelp by New Brighton inside of Spongebob on a live sardine. We will try to make it up to you guys some how.

Elsewhere on the water, pretty much the same story on the rentals that we’ve been seeing – a few rock cod here and there. We had eleven boats out that were fishing, and probably 5 of the 11 got skunked. Ugh. Still – really nice day on the water – beautiful weather, and dolphins galore.

On the wharf, the bat rays and sardines continued to come in, and in fact the sardine bite really picked up this afternoon.

Ed is burned out, but he’s got high hopes that a day of fishing (tomorrow) will recharge his batteries. We all wish him luck.

Capitola: Shoulder-to-shoulder and smiles all around

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 92649 * This year’s Begonia Festival Fishing Derby was fantastic fun!  Most of the fish caught were bait fish – sardines and mackerel, with the larger fish being skates and rays.  The weather was gorgeous, the turnout was *spectacular*, and it was just really nice to see the fishing rods and trophies going to the younger kids this year.

We will have names and categories for the photos in a while – we’re still sorting things out a bit.  But – go ahead and click on the photo to the left here to view the gallery – Ed did a nice job with photos this year.

We do have one nice highlight from a rental to post yet, but we’re going to wait a bit as we’re kinda busy.  In the mean time if you haven’t been out here yet, today is another great dolphin watching day – they’re all over the place outside the marina.

Capitola: Nuthin here but us leopards

* WPG2 CANNOT LOCATE GALLERY2 ITEM ID 92647 * While fishing with Sheriff Larry, brother Bill fought and landed this hefty 30+ pound leopard shark. It bit on a live sardine on a halibut rig in 40 feet of water. Larry reports that the ocean does not like him today. Actually he is saying that ocean fishing is just generally bad, but you know – the world revolves around Larry. Though today he may have a point – he said he got into a bunch of washing machine wind chop which is never very fun, and bites were few and far between. Still – nice fight with the shark!
