Santa Cruz: The Buts are here!

Halibut have been showing up at the mile buoy and in closer. We heard from Dave and Al today that they landed a 12 pounder off the mile reef today. One of our commercial boats just came in with a nice one from the same area. That, plus the appearance of bait at least over by the cement ship means we may well be staring at the start of halibut season here.

Capitola: Bit slow on the home front

Stenographer and Salmon Ella
Here’s The Stenographer headed for the wharf because he forgot to bring a knife with him. Turns out he could have just as easily done without cuz the only thing he caught while fishing over by the cement ship was 4 sardines (albeit large ones) and some mystery fish that didn’t chew its food well enough. Oh well – he’s just learning. No doubt The Stenographer will provide a rich and varied selection of comic relief throughout the season.

We have two rentals out right now that left kinda late – more if it happens.

Capitola: Frank is considering hydraulics

The gang and one short of limits
Carol and Jim and Frank and Mike each hit the water in their respective boats this morning before Larry and Eric left and went out to 50 55. They were all fishing purple haze hoochies behind red flashers and in 300 feet of water. They too were fishing way down there – Frank’s downrigger was overheating and he could only get 5 feet up at a time.

Mike and Frank didn’t catch anything ’til 12:30, then they had a double and a single within an hour and came in.

Carol and Jim had their three fish by 9:30 this morning, but could not get their go home fish all the rest of the day.

All worth while however as the total catch weighed in a 72 pounds. That is some darn fine dining.

Capitola: Last ones out, first ones in

Larry and Eric and limits
Here are Larry and his son Eric with their limits for today. Larry finished his coffee and left around 7 this morning and headed out to 50 00. These four here bit on purple haze hoochies behind a red hot spot flasher deeeep. How deep? 290 feet down on the wire in 300 feet of water. Ooof!

Eric had a superhero moment out there – his line got tangled around his release and he snapped the line from the pole. The fish was still tangled up on the clip, so he wrapped the remaining line around his arm and hauled it in by hand. Woot! Nice catch Eric.
