Santa Cruz: The Buts are here!

Halibut have been showing up at the mile buoy and in closer. We heard from Dave and Al today that they landed a 12 pounder off the mile reef today. One of our commercial boats just came in with a nice one from the same area. That, plus the appearance of bait at least over by the cement ship means we may well be staring at the start of halibut season here.

Halibut are making there way in with a mix grade of sardines.
The water temp and getting some color to it (micro-life like phytoplankton) would be appreciated for the halibut soon to open rock fish opener.

Its almost may so its that time off year to hit the salmon early and drift for flatties inside if the wind gets up. More than one local restaurant has fresh monterey bay California halibut on the menu which is all good news.

The harbor trash cans have a few flat fish bodies as well indicating the bite might be a bit better than advertised.

Fishing should get good real soon
