Capitola: Just a picture now and then Smeegs and we are all good

Rui and ling
Here’s Rui with part of his catch for today. He and his brother Rubin landed this ling and about a dozen assorted rock cod fishing Capitola reef using swim baits. They caught quite a few more but let them go as they were small.

Not much to report from the rentals – we only had one out and he didn’t even get a bite. He was fishing out around the mile reef.

Kurtis technically has the highliner spot for the day as he caught a 26 inch halibut fishing New Brighton trolling a hoochie behind a dodger. Photos, however, are a bit too pedestrian for our man Kurtis. And while we have a great deal of heartfelt sympathy for Kurtis after the Butters bannana nut bread incident, we’re gonna give it to Rui here; it’s a very nice lingcod.

We had some more striper sightings on the wharf today, though nobody landed one. A sea lion was spotted with a nice 12 pounder right next to the beach around noon today, and there was someone who was casting a plug off the beach who lost one when it came off the hook.

Also – finally! – we had some people catching sardines on and off from the wharf. They’re nice 5-6 inchers, and in the late morning there were some 8-10 inch mackerel in there as well.

So – things continue waking up. You should probably start planning that first outing pretty soon.
