Capitola: Ed says his shutter button finger is sore and tired

Larry and two king salmon
So the upshot of it is that Larry found the banana seed that was mucking up his karma, and to celebrate he caught these two beautiful salmon. The larger of the two is 22 pounds, the other is 16. He caught them using the PHHBARF in 300 feet of water 35 feet down.

All the salmon action is still out by the west edge of the hole. People are spending their days trolling for the most part. There was a lot of chatter on the radio today as a derby was taking place, so it’s hard to call just how well people were doing out there. It *sounded* pretty good. It also sounds like the west side of the hole is pretty much the only place you’re going to find salmon right now – boats were coming from Monterey and Moss landing to fish it.

Closer to home a silence so complete, it’s crystaline. We had two rental boats out – they both got skunked. Both were targeting halibut and rock cod. We had one private boat out that was fishing Capitola reef in the kelp bed who came in with one very nice ling and about a half a dozen grass cod. We do not have a photo of the ling because it was beat up enough that – well – remember that scene in The Godfather with the horse? So – we are sparing you that. The only other near shore fish we saw today was the stenographer’s grass cod, which he is very happy about. Ed is even now making fun of the stenographer, “one fish wonder” etc etc.

The wharf scene has changed dramatically, though “one picture wonder” Ed didn’t have enough wherewithal to take a snapshot. We saw lots more bait coming in today. Toward the beach we’ve been seeing lots of pinhead anchovies, farther out have been decent sized sardines ranging from 4 to 8 inches. We’re waiting for the evening striper bite right now – we may have an additional pic or two for you yet today.
