Santa Cruz: Not bad for a day off

was fishing off the wharf yesterday at about noon in back of the store. I dropped my line in and asked my wife to watch it as i walked around the corner i heard her yell. Babe you have a fish! When i got there she was feeding it line letting it run. GOOD JOB LOVER! when i pulled it in after reeling for about 5min i mesured it and it was 24in, just over 6 lbs. The mystery is… Is this a starie flownder or a halibut??? you be the judge.

Absolutely a halibut a member of the left eyed flounder family, High arc on the lateral line and while wish we had starry flounder this big more often and they do show up from time to time but still they are pretty rare to find one this big these days

Nothing wrong with a nice flattie like this one a perfect eater. Good job on the wife training feeding the fish line to get the bait down. Sounds like you got it make with a wife who like fishing,a precious gift.

Halibut also have teeth from hell that are bigger than starry flounders and will use them with attitude when you try to pull the hook out of them.Use pliers save finger tissue. Starry flounders just kind of wiggle around and give up.
