Capitola: Striper Madness, but only for Joey

Joey caught a second striper just a bit smaller than the first about a half hour later. Roy Boy is now Farmer Roy – he lost another FIVE stripers today. His luck has not been exactly stellar this year – maybe he gave Joey a bit of his good fishing karma.

Just a quick wrap up for the day. Bait was pretty abundant out in the middle of the marina. It stayed there quite a while and we saw quite a few dolphins and sea lions working it. It should be at the wharf though we haven’t seen it and have no affirmative reports.

Swell is still here but our possibly over active imaginations detect that it seems to be diminishing. You may recall that last year our “weather forecasts” were not exactly accurate, so take our prediction with the appropriately large grain of salt.

Capitola: Stripers in the break!

Joey and striped bass
Joey found a striper down in the break just a few minutes ago. It seems they’re not troubled by the swell (which is still here). It has been a slow day otherwise, so this is a welcome break.

There’s been quite a lot of bait in the marina throughout the day, though it’s not yet at the wharf.

Santa Cruz: Flatty off the lighthouse

Larry and halibut
Sheriff Larry just came in with this 10 pounder. He caught it off the lighthouse this morning. Not the barn door he’s hoping for but it’ll do :)

We only have a few boats out today and none have returned yet so we’ll see. We do however still have a swell rolling in here and the winds are up, so we are currently not very optimistic.

Capitola: You do not see these often

Black Seabass before releasing
Forrest sent us this photo and the following note about a month ago … and then we promptly lost it in the noise of our until-today massivly disorganized email inbox:

++++++++++++++++

Hey Guys, I caught this juvenile black sea bass off New Brighton in 25 feet of water, yesterday 6-7-10. It bit on a live sardine. It put up a hell of a fight and darn near ripped the pole out of my hand. What a powerful fish. I netted it and weighed it in at 24lbs and approx 34 inches long. If you choose to post this pic will you please make a note that this is a catch and release only fish so others who don’t know will know. This one swam away happily.

Thank you,

Forrest

We have wanted a photo like this for years – to help our customers know what NOT to catch. If you keep one of these and get caught you’ll owe ,000!! So – look carefully at this – memorize it – and if you catch one, put it back quickly.

Thanks Forrest!
