Capitola: That swell is still winding down – please hurry up!

Dave and halibut
A little late afternoon/early evening wharf action here! Dave just landed this 10 pound flatty fishing a live sardine on a sliding rig down in the surf line. This is one of the cases where persistence matters – Dave has put in a lot of quality time down in that area of the wharf this summer. Congratulations on a fine catch Dave!

The wharf has been Perchville all day today – that’s all we’ve seen anyway. Though it was a beautiful warm day up until when the easterly started blowing.

Bait has been scarce all day. Ed saw pelicans working it a bit outside the marina this morning but he didn’t get out to see what was up so we don’t have details other than that bait was harder to come by than has been normal these days.

Capitola: That is one hefty mess of fish gentlemen!

Aaron Jesse Cooper Ryan and rock cod
Aaron, Jesse, Cooper, and Ryan went fishing on one of the four rentals we had out today and brought back this highlining catch of rock fish. Their total take was 17 keepers and they said they released quite a few more along with a couple short lingcod. They were fishing by the new buoy using mostly frozen anchovies on shrimp fly rigs. They said squid was working too but the anchovies were working better.

On the three other rentals, one came in with a legal ling which they caughtusing squid on shrimp fly rigs (they said they broke off a couple of big ones in the course of the day too), one came in with two brown rock cod, and one came in with two sardines and a few kingfish (they just fished at the edge of the marina).

Capitola: Fish Sniffer Here She Comes!

Shawn and salmon
Here’s Shawn with the two salmon that she caught while out fishing the west edge of the hole with Josh (Darn Glenn Jr.) today. One was 18 and the other 16 pounds. She was using a purple haze hoochie behind a green hot spot flasher. They were fishing in 300 feet of water all the way down. Beautiful fish Shawn!

Sheriff Larry caught one as well today – he was fishing in the same area and also on the bottom. His fish was 13 pounds. He also pulled in a whopper; his son Eric took a tumble into the ocean when a rogue wave rolled the boat. According to Eric it was very refreshing.

We heard of some 30 pounders on the radio today before everyone got blown off the water. They were saying that the trick was to bounce your ball off bottom.
