Santa Cruz: Sheriff Larry loves driving — and driving and driving

several halibut
Here are several halibut – these were caught by Dan and Ed and Dave while fishing northwest up the coast a ways. All these bit on live and freshly dead squid, which was plentiful in several spots. Sheriff Larry also caught a limit of flatties in the same area, but his fish are not pictured here because he is Special. Sizes ranged from 4.5 to 15 pounds.

Halibut were also being caught on squid around the whistle buoy in Santa Cruz today – no real need to go trekking up the coast actually.

Back in Capitola, we had quite a few boats out today – 9 fishing. We saw only a few rock cod come in, and a grand total of three lingcod. Myron said it was pretty slow at the red buoy today; a better location was near the old Sponge Bob location.

Bait in Capitola was spotty but jiggable this morning. Still sardines. This evening it’s worth noting that some pelicans are diving in close to the wharf – could the bait finally be moving in here?

Weather was excellent for fishing – not so much for tanning. Water stayed flat just about all day long and well up the coast. Pretty remarkable really – the marine layer broke for only a couple hours this afternoon.
