Capitola: An enigma wrapped in a riddle

Ed and halibut
Fishing was good for some, not so good for others today. Ed is among those for whom the former is true – he caught this 10 pound flattie fishing off Soquel point just past the number 3 buoy with a live sardine on a halibut rig. Ed is our highliner today!

We had eleven boats out, but quite a few skunks – by Myron the Mariner’s count perhaps as many as 4 boats came in with zero fish. Those that did catch something came in with rock cod ranging from small to nice.

Blame the bait situation – it was tricky! Ed said after wasting an hour in the marina and only getting six sardines, he tried down by New Brighton. He found some balls over there, but when he dropped down in the middle of them he came up with small anchovies – three inchers. He found that if he instead drove circles around them, that he could reliably catch nice sardines. Right now there is a bit more bait outside the marina (a bit more from basically zero) – it is scattered in medium sized balls. Ed guesses that right now you could get 50 sardines an hour out there jigging.

As far as the wharf – we confess we just plain did not have eyes on it today. We’ll take a wild stab in the dark and say “perch”. Ed brought in a dozen live baits just now, so hopefully someone will convert those into something more interesting.
