Capitola: Not many boats, but the action is picking up a bit

Alex with Nellie and Kelly and rock cod
Nellie and Kelly went fishing with their dad Alex today and landed a total of 13 rock fish between them. They were fishing off Capitola reef using chunks of anchovies on a surf leader rig. They had a blast – good call dad!

We only had six boats out fishing today with three skunks. The other boat that caught fish came in with black, blue, and brown rock fish along with some kingfish and sardines.

The wharf saw some action today – Roy Boy caught an 18.5 inch striper down in the surf line with a live sardine under a bobber. We also had some sightings of additional stripers in the water down there – could be some action tonight yet.

There’s still some bait around the marina, though Ed didn’t get a chance to go fish for any. There were dolphins and sea lions and birds working it though.

Beautiful weather remains with us – it’ll be a nice week to play hookie from work or whatever :)

Capitola: We need to hide a gps on this boat….

Waylan and lingcod
Wayland here landed this 32 inch lingcod in one of Mark’s favorite spots (which he’s not divulging) on black rock cod. He also caught another legal ling, four that were undersized, a nice vermillion, and six big brown rock cod. Needless to say, they highlined the day with their catch. Awesome!

Capitola: Fish are like popcorn around here

Todd Scott Shane and rockfish
Todd Scott and Shane went fishing in a rental out by Adam’s reef today using a variety of metal jigs and shrimp fly rigs with strips of squid. They were not our highliners, but they definitely caught the largest rockfish.

We had 18 boats out with at least 5 skunks. Alex’s group caught lots of rockfish – small blacks and yellows, grass cod, and a few browns – fishing the kelp beds today, and we had reports of many undersized lings being caught and released.

There’s still some fishing to be had out there. Aside from what we saw come in on the rentals, we heard on the radio that someone brought in a 34 inch halibut outside the harbor today – nice if it’s real!

Weather was amazing. Some of us are in fact fuming about it ‘cuz this season has been above-average gloomy for the most part. Looks like the “everything is late by a month” theme is still going strong. We’re set forecast wise for another several days of cloudless skies and warm temperatures, so it’s still a great time fishing out here.

Capitola: Just pretend the wharf is a big ship

John and halibut
Here’s John and his first ever legal halibut! He caught this fishing off the wharf of all places. He was fishing between the gate and the beach using a live sardine on a sliding rig. Congratulations John!

You might well ask where that live sardine came from. Well, as it happens Ed went and jigged some up just outside the marina. Earlier today folks were jigging them up off the wharf (before some sea lions scared them off). Ed says that we currently have a mix of sardines and somewhat larger anchovies, and they’re just again in casting range of the wharf. Woot.

We had one rental out today plus Myron the Mariner. The rental got skunked and Myron caught a few sardines.
