Capitola: Mark says Konnichiwa

Mark and halibut
We only have one post for today at the moment due to a little snafu on Ed’s part. The photo we will not be posting ’til tomorrow morning is one in which James and Sev show off their very nice collection of rock cod. We will post it tomorrow.

For now however we are thrilled to bring you Mark’s catch of the day – this 24 inch halibut. He caught this using frozen anchovies on a halibut rig fishing out in front of O’neil’s in about 45-50 feet of water. This was the only fish he caught but he said he’d be happy to pose for the report so his friends and family could see it. Congratulations Mark!

We had 16 boats out today with somewhere in the area of 4-5 skunks. One boat got to battle a big bat ray for a while, and one came in with some jacksmelt. Otherwise, boats that caught fish caught rock fish. One caught as many as 16 (though they said many of them were small and they only kept the bigger ones).

On the radio we heard of a white seabass being caught up the coast a ways, and we know that one was caught just off the #3 yellow buoy yesterday.

On the wharf today we saw a few perch, a skate, and a few very small kingfish. Bait has stayed away and it was in general difficult to fish from the wharf due to the fact that there’s a bunch of loose kelp around.

Bait in general was hard to find today unless you bought some dead stuff. We have had a swell move in that’s really made a mess of things so this is not much of a surprise.
