Capitola: Small steps Ellie, small steps
| So Ed went out and spent his own danged money on a new camera while we wait for the Best Buy magic to fix the old one. We have been telling “No Ed No – give the receipt to Frank, you R Tard” – but no – he’s got some ascetic thing going on. What ev.
And so with all that drama you’d think he’d actually have taken more than one photo today. You would be wrong sir. This is it – in all it’s glory. Read on. Enjoy. Francis, Augustine, and Rudy were our highliners today with two lings and a whole mess of mixed rock cod. Augustine had the hot rod – he caught the lings, but looks like they were plenty busy all day anyway. They were fishing out in front of O’Neil’s using rock cod jigs and chunks of anchovies. Nice to see you guys back here! We had 10 boats out today, but only four of those boats started fishing early in the morning, and they were the ones that came in with fish. The rest got blown off the water when the wind came up and ended up not having spent even a half hour out there. The boats that caught – aside from Rudy’s boat here – caught decent rock cod and some king fish. Wharf: Zzzzz ZZZ z – Roy Boy is down in the surf trying some live bait right now – fingers crossed. Word from the ship: [SILENCE] Bait: Ed went jigging for bait today and brought in a couple dozen sardines. We don’t actually know how bait was around the marina this morning, but Ed got the bait he caught out around New Brighton beach. It was pretty plentiful, with mixed in small chovies to boot. |

Capitola: Ptewwwwwwwwww!!!
We have two nice photos on Ed’s cell phone right now, but we’ll be goldanged if we can figure out how to get them from there to the web site. We really need Our Fearless Leader to just buck up and buy us a new camera (hint hint Frank). (<——— FRANK <—————–)
Yesterday we had very little to talk about. We only had four boats out and nobody caught anything. ZzzZzzz. Today is a different story.
The first of the two pictures we can’t show you depicts Irwin and his buddies with the 12 pound halibut they caught fishing outside the mile reef using frozen squid on a halibut rig. The second of the two photos shows Kut holding a 15.5 pound halibut that he caught inside the yellow buoy in front of O’Neil’s using live kingfish.
All told we had a healthy 10 boats out today, and no skunks. We did have a few boats that had only king fish though they were targeting them so really – they were happy. The more significant catches included four halibut in addition to the two we already mentioned, and a bunch of small rock cod that showed up around the red buoy.
Peter tried for halibut in front of the harbor with no success. He did throw back two legal lings and several nice vermillion and browns (enough for two limits of rock cod) from the same area. They really wanted that flattie though. His buddy Kut caught it in another rental though (see above). Better luck next time.
Once again nothing of significance on the wharf. Some small kingfish, a few walleyes and shiner perch. The story is apparently different over by the cement ship – word is nine stripers were caught there last night and four the night before. They have much more bait in that area near the pier at the moment.
Bait was in fact quite plentiful in the middle of the marina this morning – Larry loaded up from there as he left early. They were solid from top to bottom from 18 feet to 35 feet of water in front of the wharf. By 9:00am that bait dissipated. Right now there are some pelicans diving in the shallows, but we have a full blown easterly going here at the moment – it is cold – so nobody’s fishing right now.

Capitola: Ed mighty hunter catches big fish
| Our Eduardo went ta fishin off Soquel point inside the yellow buoy – turns out this halibut here went fishing in the same area. Guess who won? Ed was using a live sardine on a single hook live bait rig. He caught this one at 2:00 this afternoon. Just before he caught this one he lost another one in the same area that had bitten on a dead sardine and ripped a bunch of line out. Darn. Darndudeedarndarn.
Obviously, he caught some bait! It was very abundant off New Brighton beach this morning – when it’s not outside the marina it’s usually down there. There were some small balls outside the marina but he did not have the patience. No wharf action to speak of. Bummer. Ed notes that the water is looking awesome – the color was brown in some areas, clear in others, and there’s lots of bird life all over the place. Including some shearwaters which as you may recall we had clouds of last year this time. |

Capitola: These guys get the all, everyone else gets the nothing
| Robert and Bryer had a rock cod bonanza today – they hooked up on this nice ling and 25 brown rock fish 15 of which they kept! We forgot to get what they were fishing with, but they were up off the point in close by the kelp. These guys highlined the rentals in a big way today. We had a total of seven boats out, and it was Myron’s impression that most boats got skunked. So – way to go Robert and Bryer!! |

Capitola: We are not very good directors
Today’s “The only camera we have is a video one” post is decidedly not as good as yesterday’s. We will include more text in this post to make up for it. That said, here are today’s highlights:
The kayak catch you saw there was courtesy of Dino -- he caught those using live kingfish outside the kelp bed in front of O’Neil’s. The highliner position is a toss up -- the first halibut was in fact bigger, but in terms of combined poundage Dino probably wins.
One of the excuses for poor quality of the video today that we’ve been field testing is “we were very very busy” -- which is true. We had the whole fleet out again and managed to send a few boats out more than once. And of course everyone came in kind of at once.  So it is an excuse that kinda works.
We saw a few rentals that got skunked, but they were again in the minority. Most boats had some rock fish. And we again had a boat come in with some kelp greenlings aboard.
It sounded like bait was very very scarce today. That has changed just recently as we’ve seen some sardines coming up off the wharf. This has been the pattern -- today it’s a little earlier than it has been.
We’re contemplating other ways to deal with the camera crisis right now -- please bear with us.

Capitola: Those Best Buy Warrantees Have Questionable Value
Ed took the camera in for what he thought would be a no questions asked return of his relatively new and malfunctioning camera, only to be confronted with “No problem sir, we’ll just send that in for repair -- it’ll just be one and a half to three weeks!”.
So we have no still camera, but we do have backup in the form of a video camera. So the visual part of today’s post is here:
In short -- it was a pretty good day! Nearly every boat caught fish -- in fact we actually didn’t notice any boats without. Everyone seemed to have at least a hand full of nice rock fish. One boat came in with a small flattie, though it’s hard to call them the highliner as so many boats came in with rock cod limits.
Aside from all that, we haven’t seen any bait on the wharf today nor anything really remarkable save for a pesky harbor seal that’s been swimming around with a bobber hooked to its lip (it will rust out in a day or two -- don’t worry).
And we were kinda slammed, so we didn’t get to take the pulse of the bait situation outside the harbor, but from what we saw fish were biting on just about everything anyhow so it’s not that important.
Oh -- and Larry’s fish came from somewhere up the coast a ways -- we are not sure where.

Capitola: The trick is to have Ed bump your boat
| Dave caught this 22 pound flatty exactly where you see it here – by the second yellow can off the point! Ed took this photo as he was out enjoying a little well deserved R and R on the water. Beautiful fish Dave!
You should be aware that this was going to be Ed’s drift. He’s grumbling. I was gonna go there, darnit. He did four drifts here, but they only produced one small ling and one small rock cod. Oh well – it certainly was nice fishing weather as you can see. Bait was MUCH easier to get this morning outside the marina – just drop a sabiki somewhere and eventually you loaded up. The kingfish were a little farther out – a fact the stenographer would have been happier to have known before he spent half the bleep bleep morning trying to find them. But: kingfish are still abundant – just farther out and of course on the bottom. There was some bait coming into the wharf at the end of the day – not thick, but jiggable off the wharf. Tomorrow is supposed to still be flat and calm like it was today and the day before that – fingers crossed. It has been amazing for fishing. |

Capitola: John rolls a boxcar!
| This is John’s sixth striper off the wharf this year! He caught this legal striper using a live sardine on a sliding rig in the surf line. Nice catch John!
The bait John was using was courtesy of our Mr. Ed – he brought in a bunch of leftover live stuff from the little expedition he went on today. Thanks Ed! |

Capitola: That is one big clump of grass!
| Dan caught this 4.5 pound grass cod fishing with strips of squid on a white shrimp fly rig off Bomborra today – we’re thinking it bit later in the afternoon. We had a surprising amount of boats out today – nearly the entire fleet! Needless to say, our crew was somewhat unprepared for this, so we did not really do a good job of surveying the catch. Quite a few boats did have rock cod, and we know of one that had 20 of them. |
