Comment on Santa Cruz: Swell is no obstacle if you know where to go by Capitola Boat and Bait

Well, Maryann, we are hesitant to say anything at all about it due to the fact that there seems to be some kind of painful karmic disjunction; when we say it's gonna be good, it's bad, and vis versa. And it doesn't work to say "hehe - yeah - it'll be bad" and expect it to be good. Go figure.

That said, here's what you'll want to look at:

http://capitolaboatandbait.com/forecast

http://capitolaboatandbait.com/forecast/monterey-bay

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecast/marine.php?marine=PZZ560

The first one explains a bit about how the microclimate works here, the second is the marine forecast for Monterey bay, and the last one is the marine forecast for the coast just outside of the bay. Here are the things to watch for:

* South to southwest winds in excess of 10kts
* South to southwest swell in excess of 3 feet

Be sure to read the last forecast - the "outside" one - to double check stuff from the south-westerly direction.

My reading of it (*not a prediction!!!*) is that winds will turn back into their normal summer W/NW direction on Saturday and there will just be some lingering small SW swell - nothing to worry about. Today the swell is down significantly, and we'll likely make some comment about the swell at the end of each day in the fishing report.

The "swell from hell" has really only (apparently) lasted one night and one day - as I said it's coming down already. And even then, the "hellish" part of it had more to do with how un-fun it is to launch boats - away from shore it was flat as a board.

Ed, you have a great web site. I read it daily. I am looking forward to taking out one of your skiffs this Saturday, and bringing home the BIG ONE. My Fishing buddy Tom will also be taking one out.(Save your lucky boat for me!)
These pictures really get you blood running. I hope to be included in one, this Saturday afternoon?
Thanks, Jim Boeddiker and friends.

Here's one that Larry caught and released off the wharf a couple years ago. http://capitolaboatandbait.com/wpg2?g2_itemId=2966

Here's the Wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_sea_bass

The photos really don't do the fish justice - the colors are amazing.

We have some old photos of giant/black seabass on the walls in the Capitola shop. They're worth seeing - these things get ***HUGE*** (as do the fines, as previously mentioned).

hey, sea cliff dave!! someone took the picture during my catch and release. [expletive deleted]
come down and say that to my face. im there every day and have been for 27 years
[expletive deleted]s like you need lessons on manners,im not posing for a picture
with this puny flattie, i was waiting for extra long needle nose pliers to arrive.
You see, rattle traps are not meant to catch halibut and the treble was holding
the mouth shut therefore keeping it out of the water was what i did for 45 seconds!!
What,do you jump in the water to unhook you under size catch?
I am glad i was able to save it and im glad someone took the picture during my catch and release. [expletive deleted]

What on earth is the 8lb fish pictured here? If it's a California halibut, why are its fin rays so long and the fish so dark colored on both sides. Is it unique to see different variations of color patterns on halibut
and this one either was just different or perhaps may be a smaller pacific halibut which has a one fish any size limit. If ed called it a California it is a California he knows his fish down pat! i was curious as it looked really dark particularly for a California halibut of that size
