Kurtis and Dan again went on a 80 mile boat ride today and have these seven fish to show for it. Well - and more stories of mako sharks - Kurtis saw one but could not make it bite. They’re switing to halibut tomorrow - they are “over it”.

Here are Anthony, James, and Kirkland with the grass cod they caught off Capitola reef today. All the fish they caught bit on swim baits. This was a pretty typical catch on the boats aside from the few that brought in giants. Lots of boats said they had something big on but got spooled or snapped off. Most likely these were threshers - they’re definitely around.

It was trickier to find bait today - once again pinhead anchovies in shallow, and sardines and mackerel out a bit further in 40-50 feet of water.

The swell remains very very down - it’s not completely gone, but the halibut that we’ve seen today is evidence that it’s not bothering the groundfish any.

Otherwise - beatiful day - overcast in the morning, sunny around noon through til now - wind picked up out of the west about 1 pm. Forecast calls for the same tomorrow - that’d certainly be nice.

Antonette and her friend cashed in on the “one big fish per boat” trend today with this 27 pound thresher shark! They caught it fishing dead anchovies in 50 feet of water off New Brighton. There was all kinds of unusual drama associated with the catch: Ed had gone out to help them start the motor, but when he arrived they were fully engaged with fighting this fish. Ed coached them through it - they fought it for a total of 30 minutes, and they finally got it into the boat with a gaff. Turns out the problem with the motor was just that they weren’t pulling hard enough. Hehe - fate works in mysterious ways sometimes. The rest of the day was slow but enjoyable for them - the caught a few odds and ends - an octopus, a mackerel, and a perch. Beautiful fish Antonette!

Oh - yeah - so there is this one other thing that’s been going on around here - tuna! Here are some of our more intrepid fishermen with their catch for today - seven nice albacore tuna. They went out about 80 miles southwest from here - 36º 25′ N 123 º 12′ W. The fish bit on all kinds of lures - all the standard trolling jigs. It didn’t matter what really - the fish were biting anything. The fleet in the area was about 15 strong, and one or two boats were talking about staying the night.

One other little detail - when Kurtis got back he was all breathless cuz he had a mako shark on - somewhere in the 200-250 pound range (it was a good 8 feet long). They saw it finning, and they chased it around until Kurtis hooked it. It was on for 30 seconds before it broke the line (it was only 25 pound test). He’s going to target them tomorrow (which will be his 63rd consecutive fishing day) - hopfully we’ll see a monster mako in here tomorrow afternoon.

Aaron, Raymond, and Litao were our highliners today with a 33 pound thresher shark and a small halibut. They kinda bucked the local mythology here: you’ll notice that the guy on the left is holding a chip of some sort. It is a ***banana*** chip, which means they had a ***really*** lucky day. The locals here curse the very existence of the fruit - it’s bad juju for fishing. So wow - congratulations you guys!!

Anyway - they caught the thresher on a swim bait off O’Neil’s - same for the halibut. They also lost a nice lingcod and a halibut in the same area - the halibut got off at the boat (doubtless that was the chip’s fault).

Perch fishing on the wharf is still very good - we saw lots of walleyes and shiners and some jacksmelt coming up on various bait jigs and surf leaders with small hooks and little pieces of shrimp. And all this despite the fact that the swell is way down today - usually the perch and such get a little less active when the break goes away but they’re still hungry - good news for wharf fishing.

Bait wise, Ed saw a bunch of pinhead anchovies popping all around the wharf early in the morning. Some of these were caught on bait jigs this morning (they went into hiding later in the day). We’re still waiting for the regular influx of anchovies - it really hasn’t happened yet. When they do, we should see more stripers and halibut around - chovies are tastier (or something). Paradoxically, some boats were having trouble jigging up bait today, but there was a good bait ball off New Brighton - it was a matter of being in the right spot. If the swell continues its downward trend, there should be no problem getting bait.

Anyhow, here’s Myron the Mariner with his catch for the day - a 26 inch halibut and a grass cod. He caught them this morning off Capitola reef using frozen chovies on a halibut rig. We only had four boats out today - Myron the Mariner was not the highliner today as you’re about to see. But he was very happy with his catch - he’s definitely getting the hang of this fishing thing. Congratulations Myron.

Jim should probably start playing the lottery or something. . It was his first time out in his boat this year, and he left around 12:30 as he had to charge his battery before he left. We went out to O’Neils and tried some frozen chovies, but had no joy. Then a ball of sardines floated under his boat - he jigged some of those up and next thing you know there’s a 26 inch halibut in his boat. Pretty smooth dude!

We only had one rental out today - they fished Capitola reef and a few other spots and came in with a few rock fish. It is difficult to extrapolate from that, so I will not try

The forecast continues to show a very small intermittent SW component to the wind in the outside forecast, but that’s supposed to be gone by Saturday. The reality of it is this: the swell appears to be subsiding substantially, and the gloominess seems to be leaving us. All nice trends if they continue.

Remember tomorrow is the last day for boat bucks this week - if you wanna play hookie and get some fish tomorrow’s the day!
